Thanks to everyone who took the time to nominate a teacher for the Teacher of the Year Award. The selection committee met in November and selected Ms. Heather Shapiro as the 2009 Teacher of the Year for Langley. Ms. Shapiro has been teaching at Langley for 7 years as part of the social studies department. There were many nominations -- from both the parent-student community and the teachers -- for this wonderful award. All the nominees were honored by Principal Ragone during the November staff meeting.
Representing Langley, Mrs. Shapiro will move on as a nominee for the prestigious FCPS Teacher of the Year award. Following that, all the nominees from VA, MD and DC public and private schools will compete to win the Washington Post’s Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher award for 2009. Best wishes to Mrs. Shapiro on this well-deserved award and good luck in the competition! Thanks to all the teachers of Langley for the wonderful job they do -- day in and day out, in ways large and small -- to help our children.
On December 11th, Langley HS, in concert with the PTSA and the Athletic Boosters, will hold “Conversations That Count: The High School Social Scene” for the freshman students and their parents. The event is a facilitated discussion between parents and students led by Langley administrators, students, and professional staff. The evening will include both education and dialogue relating to the prevention of underage drinking as well as conversations on high school social expectations. Due to space limitations, we ask that only one parent and one student per family attend. The main event will begin promptly at 7:00 pm and end at 8:30 p.m. To RSVP, please contact parent Michelle Spady at michellespady2@verizon.net.
If you are not receiving weekly Keep in Touch messages you most likely need to update your email address. It’s easy: all you have to do is update your child’s Emergency Care Information. We encourage parents to access and update their child’s emergency care information online by using weCare@school, a web tool within FCPS 24-7: Parent View. If you need assistance with a Parent View account, please contact 1-866-434-8880. You may also fill out or update your child's emergency care information form and return it to the main office. Please call the school if you continue to have problems receiving KIT messages.

Congratulations to the pictured seniors, who were selected by audition to participate in the VMEA Honors Choir. Over 500 students auditioned; Langley had 7 of the 132 students selected. Langley also had 3 students who placed first in their voice part. These students will be attending the event in Covington, Virginia on November 20 – 22, culminating in a concert at the Homestead for the State Music Conference.
The NEWSWEEK list of top U.S. high schools was compiled this year, as in years past, according to a single metric, the proportion of students taking college-level exams: Cambridge, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement. We count the total number of these tests taken at a school by all students each May, and divide by the number of graduating seniors. More...
Langley High School appears on the Newsweek list as #55 in the country and the highest ranked of the FCPS high schools.
From Massachusetts to California, a look at the schools that excel in teaching students. There are more than 18,000 public high schools in the United States. What if you could take a snapshot of each one and capture, at a particular moment, what kinds of students were enrolled there and the caliber of the education provided them? If you were to collect these individual snapshots into one huge national yearbook, which high school would be chosen as "Most Likely to Succeed," meaning that it set the best example of how to prepare students to achieve their post-graduation goals?
